Ticket for a 1898 fundraising parade in Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade. Batalhas das Flores (literally Flower Battles), a concept imported from the French Batailles des Fleurs, were parades where cars and carriages were decorated with flowers. As they passed each other, contestants threw each other flowers – hence the name. Tickets were sold, and the proceeds were used to finance social assistance endeavours.1
